The Ferret Calendar 2003

Lots of Fun!
These calendars are a must for any ferret lover. I don't know how Jeanne thinks of all these poses, but I have gotten these calendars for the last 5 years and am continually impressed with the creativity of these photos.
Guests to our home always comment on the calendar, and even those who don't like ferrets have to admit that the photos are cute.
I would definitely recommend this calendar - the quality of the photographs are exceptional and really capture the spirit of "ferretness". All in all, a lot of fun!

Ferret-moms Love The Ferret Calendar
I know there are other ferret calendars on the market (well, at least ONE other), but the quality and content of Jeanne Carley's photos makes this series exceptional. I haven't missed one yet, and I don't intend to...EVER!

Those of us who own and love ferrets are captivated by the adorable little faces, the unconditional sweetness, the intelligence and the "perpetual kittenhood" of these little animals...oh, did I forget to mention ATTITUDE?!?!? But even those who aren't ferret-parents are hard put to resist the charm of ferrets as presented in the pictures in The Ferret Calendar.

This makes a WONDERFUL gift, particularly for children. And a lot of us Older Children have it on our wish lists, too!

The "BEST" Ferret Calendar
If you don't own a ferret now. Owning this calendar just might make your mind up for you.
Jeanne Carley, who is the Photographer and Publisher, has really outdone herself in her new 2003 Ferret Calendar. Her themes are fun. Her set design and artistry are clever and unique. She brings out the comical side of ferrets for us to enjoy each month.
I can't wait for next years.

Mom's Family Calendar 2002

Average review score:

The Perfect Calendar for Every Family!
I cannot live without this calendar. It has totally organized my busy family. Each family member has their own box for each day of the month, no color coding pens needed. With just a glance everyone in the family can see who is doing what and when. It would make a great gift for any busy Mom.

For Busy but Organized Family
I love this calendar because it accomodates the schedules of up to 5 family members. The dates are listed on the first 2 columns on the left and 5 columns are provided for family members. It is like having 5 calendars in one! My 2 teen daughters are good about writing in their school, piano, flute, club, baby-sitting jobs and social activities promptly. In the same way, they can immediately see what mom and dad have scheduled for the whole family or individually.
The colorful and humorous illustrations keep the resulting organizational efficiency at a FUN family level.

Great family calendar
If you have a busy family, this calendar is a godsend. It allows you plenty of space for every member of the family to put their own schedule on the calendar. It also has Sandra Boynton's wonderful funny artwork on it, too. Hard to beat!

Water Light Time
Published in Calendar by Phaidon Press Inc. (September, 2002)
Author: David Doubilet

Genius
I had unknowingly admired Doubilet's work in many National Geographic articles over the years. The recent Great White cover photo was fantastic although a little untimely as it had to be hidden from my girlfriend who I was going diving with for 2 weeks a month later.

I was proud of a few photos I took on that holiday but when I saw this book I almost threw my camera away. Doubilet takes underwater photography to another level altogether. This book displays Doubilet's talent and dedication to the full with a diverse portfolio taken over many years from all over the world. The light in his trademark above & below water photo's is so perfectly balanced my friends assumed it was manipulated.

Buy this book for anyone who appreciates natural beauty. My Mother and girlfriend were first on my list and just as impressed.

Exceptionally beautiful photographs
This book contains exceptionally beautiful underwater photographs. Most images are in colour, but there are also some remarkable black white shots, taken by the photographer at different locations throughout the world. The photographer presents the reader with images that are rare and unforgettable. Congratulations to the author David Doubilet for sharing with the world such an exceptional work of art.

Quite possibly best photography book ever.
This book rivals, and in many instances surpasses, the great underwater photography works of Chris Newbert (Within A Rainbowed Sea, In A Sea Of Dreams). I never thought I'd live to see a work of underwater art more stunning than Newbert's, but Doubilet has certainly raised the bar. The black and white work is haunting (especially the manta shots) and his use of light is mindbending. If you love the ocean and its sea-peoples, buy this book -- you won't regret it!

Inspirational
This book has inspired me. I have found several meditations that apply whole heartedly to my life. I have retyped and copied several of the quotes and taped them to my refrigerator or put them on my bulletin board at work. This is a book I needed years ago.

This book has given me insight and inspiration on several different topics. Since I bought it a few years ago, I have yet to put it down. I'm always reading this. I have become more pleasant in certain circumstance because of something I've read here.

For anybody facing lifes highs and lows or debating whether or not to start meditating this book is one you should have. It's so nice to have a book that focuses on the daily ins and outs of being a person of color.

Thank you Iyanla for Acts of Faith
During the beginning of 1999 I was having one bad day after another. One day I decided to take an extra long lunch bought the book, and read up to that present date. It help me to put my troubles in perspective. I now share the passages with with my spouse, my children, friends and I am kept sane and whole by it. I truly believe that it is a tool of God to reach us and to bring us peace for our souls. I had a troubling time with my sister in March of this year and each passage during those days were like having my parents (both of whom a deceased) arms wrapped around me. It kept me from really hurting her feelings and kept my end of the relationship repaired. Thank you Iyanla your gift of this book will resound though the centuries. Love Barbara

Acts of Faith will created a new way to look at life!!!!!!
This book is a must have ! This wonderful book discusses a wide variety of struggles and everyday problems that we face as people of color. It gives you a positive way to look at problems, when you may think there's no way out, This book gives the solution !I have bought this book three times, gave away 2 to my friends and kept one for myself of course, it makes an excellent gift, that will last a lifetime. Each page is so well thought out and easy to comprehend. So I pass this book to you with hopes that you will read it and pass it on to all friends Thanks your reading my opinion, Shawn

A Timeless Read
I noticed that my mother was using the paperback edition of this devotional to write little prayer requests and thoughts in the margins. This prompted me to buy her the journal version of the devotional which gives her much more space to write and includes the same powerful devotionals. It was a great gift!

Another great idea is the "Devotions for Morning and Evening With Mrs. Charles E. Cowman : The Complete Daily Devotions of Streams in the Desert and Springs in the Valley". Even though it is a little harder to find, my mother claims that the evening devotionals which are taken from Cowman's "Springs in the Valley"
are just as moving as the Morning devotionals (taken from "Streams in the Desert"), if not more so.

I have been reading the paperback devotional and I enjoy it greatly. It is non-judmental and very loving. My fave devotional!

Hush Little Baby

A Pleasant Surprise
I was pleasantly surprised when I recieved this gift set in the mail, as a present from a friend off of my baby registry. The gift set is beautifully packaged and the toy is soft and plush and makes a quiet rattling sounds--quiet enough to not annoy mommy, but loud enough for baby to enjoy. It is also curled up in a C, so that you can fit the bunny rattle right onto her cradle or changing table.

The book is great--A very soft and warm writing of the hush little baby song that focuses more on nature and baby goods other than diamond rings and such (as the original song goes). It's a great book to read to baby at bedtime, and very soothing. I'm glad we recieved this!

This bedtime story book holds Mom's attention too!
This is one of our top ten bedtime stories for our preschool children. It is the discovery of beauty and love as a mother guides her child on a bedtime trek from the porch, to the rocking chair, to the bed. It is a warm and sensitive version of the "mockingbird" Hush Little Baby lullaby. My children don't ask me for a mockingbird, a diamond ring, looking glass, etc. and so that original version seems outdated. Hooray for Sylvia Long...this book reflects a new time and a new generation of parents. She has done an excellent job in creating a book that shows a mother's love and the security of having many options at your fingertips that enrich your life (or in this book make you drift off in contented sleep). Younger children enjoy having a book read to them time after time (moreso than the parents enjoy the reading of it). It seems that with Hush Little Baby I find new details in the artwork each reading and even I havn't tired of it yet. Every page is warm and cozy and filled with nature or cuddles or quilts or bears..all things little children can relate to. I love the individual stitching around the illustrations - a different one each time you turn the page. A negative noteworthy comment (made by three of my children)is that at times the bunnys' ears are very short and seem catlike. Overall I would say this is a must in a childrens' home library!

Beautiful Book
This is one of our favorites. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. Its a wonderful nighttime book to sing to our baby, and the new story created by the author is terrific. The pajama clad bunny is cute and our baby loves to play with him. A must have in your library.

Where the Sidewalk Ends

Funny and Uplifting. Great Poems for ALL Ages!
I remember this book in the second grade! Wow, that was a long time ago. I remember enjoying the poems very much. Well, I stumbled upon this book a few weeks ago and decided to read them again. It had been quite some time. I still enjoyed it just as much as when I was little, if not more. "Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a literary treat for all ages.

The poems are funny and sincere at the same time. I really enjoyed each and every poem. The drawings are also really good. Just to give you a little taste of my Silverstein's work, here's the very first poem I heard from this book when I was little called, "Hat." And it goes a little something like this:

Teddy said it was a hat,
So I put it on.
Now Dad is saying, "Where the heck's
the toilet plunger gone?"

That's only a SMALL taste of the wonders you will find in this book. My other favorites are "Hat," "Dancing Pants," "I Must Remember," "Warning," "Who," and "The Land of Happy." I'm sure there are many more, but that's all I can think of right now. Bottom line: EVERY poem is great.

Although this is really great for kids, I think this is something EVERYONE would enjoy. Young or old, "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein is a fine read. One of my favorites.

(If you liked this one, check out "A Light in the Attic." Very good book as well.)

Shel is magic
I never read this book when I was a kid, but as an adult, I felt the magic and shared it with MY children. I probably ran across his poems when I was young, but never knew who wrote them. That's a shame because I missed stepping into Shel's world completely until I was in my 20s.

My kids love these poems, and have since they were old enough to giggle. I take them to read-aloud in my children's classrooms now, and make darn sure new generations not only know who Shel was, but know that he's the magician behind the poetry.

If you haven't read this book, or any of Shel Silverstein's others, you are missing out on an important part of life--to laugh and connect with the rest of the world through childhood and laughter and the silliness of life.

I'd give it ten stars if I could.

Come meet Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout...
Would you like to meet Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who would not take the garbage out? Or Dirty Dan, the world's dirtiest man? Accept Shel Silverstein's invitation to come inside his delightful book full of outrageous poems and drawings. The unpredictable and humorous actions of each crazy character grabs readers' attention, keeping them engrossed in each poem, and craving for more. Elementary school-aged children will fall over laughing at Peggy Ann McKay's desperate attempt to avoid school, claiming, "I have the measles and the mumps, a gash, a rash, and purple bumps. My mouth is wet, my throat is dry, I'm going blind in my right eye." Silverstein's use of rhyme and nonsense verse combined with his constant humor captures the reader. His simple pen-and-ink drawings add to the imagery presented in each poem. The reader not only sees, but feels lazy Jane's dry mouth as she waits for it to rain. The application of alliteration, assonance, and consonance makes each poem a delight to read out loud; "For I've been down to the edge of the world, sat on the edge where the wild wind whirled." Some poems not only depict an array of humorous characters, but also create touching moments and offers good advice. Silverstein suggests playing hug o' war, rather than tug o' war, and assures young readers that, "Anything can happen, child, ANYTHING can be." Children ages nine to twelve will enjoy reading these well crafted poems that portray both ludicrous and poignant messages.

Until Now : Anne Geddes Datebook 2001 (Pocket Edition)

A book for all ages
I recieved this book as a gift. I love children, I believe they are our greatest asset, so does Anne Geddes. The natural poses, the ability to catch innocence at its best is amazing. My teenagers loved the book and so did their older grandparents. The pictures will stir a number of emotions from tears to smiles. It brought back many memories of my children as infants. This book is an outstanding investment for someone you love or anyone one who loves children.

Big, Bold Baby Book!
The hardcover version of this book deserves more than five stars. It is the most enjoyable and rewarding book of baby photographs that it has been my pleasure to view and hug. I vastly prefer it to the paperback version.

The book has lots of modestly done baby nudity, and a little partial adult female nudity that is totally tame and artistic.

One of the pleasures of this book is that the images are HUGE! In some cases (such as with preemies), the babies are almost life size. The reproduction quality and paper are outstanding, so you can almost feel like you are present with these sleeping, mewling, cuddling, delightful little creatures!

I recently reviewed Ms. Geddes's Black-and-White: Photofolio. Until Now overcomes the limitations that I found in that wonderful work. There are many more images here (113), the size and reproduction are better here, and Ms. Geddes has provided interesting notes about the origins of each photograph.

The book begins with a nice quotation from Pablo Casals about the potential that is represented by each new life. The images connect the babies to nature (appearing as part of fruits and vegetables, masquerading as insects and animals, and overwhelmed with flowers) and to other babies and people. Many of the images also play with the thought that babies are angelic. Beyond that, there is a strong message of the connection that all humans have with one another.

If you are like me, you won't fall in love with all of these photographs. Sometimes sleeping babies aren't exactly the right models for the compositions Ms. Geddes has designed. On the other hand, sleeping babies are perfect in many images here, such as the baby lying upside down on a woman's abdomen.

But almost all of the images of babies and children who are awake are amazingly good. How does she do it?

A few of the images where the babies are extremely small seemed a bit contrived to me, but they are technically very well done.

My only complaint about the book is that a few of the images on two pages are marred by the center crease, and should have been reproduced differently.

Here are some of my many favorites in this volume:

Zac & Georgina 1991; Woodland Fairy 1995; Phillip & Arin 1993; Eddie with Scott & Sean 1993; Cabbage Kids 1991; Caleb (head version) 1997; India 1992; C.J. 1996; Ruby 1994; Zac 1992; Rebecca 1991; Christopher 1995; Four Angels 1996; Peony Angel 1995; Trent & Joel 1992; Aleesha & Jessie 1992; Crocodile Tears 1990; Linda & Ben 1994; Aunty Biddy's Face 1996; Boys & Doves 1993; Kieran & Abigail as Angels; and Jim, Flora & Pearl.

I also suggest that you think about how you could create your own imaginative versions of these images with your own children and grandchildren. Imagine what a great gift of enhanced self-image that could be for the child in the future. Rather than wanting to hide her or his baby picture (like those nude shots on the rug), the child can draw upon the photograph as a source of self-image and strength.

Evoke the potential of all those around you!

Delightful
Anne Geddes has presented us with a marvel, a book that speaks volumes but has no words. Page after page the reader is introduced to babies, beautiful, huggable babies. Page after page the reader can enjoy the greatest of miracles and Ann Geddes babies are truly delightful and the reminder that miracles happen every day.

My Utmost for His Highest (Not So Itty Bitty Books)
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (April, 1994)
Authors: Oswald Chambers and Miniature Book Collection
Average review score:

Deep, but worthy of being mined
As a Bible teacher, missionary and chaplain, Oswald Chambers' love for God is shared in this book in a way that is both inspirational and challenging. Avoiding "formula" Christianity of the "pie-in-the-sky-by-and-by" genre, Chambers calls his readers to a determined and purposeful abandonment of the things of this world, and to a habitual and concentrated identification with the suffering of Christ for the sake of the world, with a view toward the joy that is set before us.

Having been originally written from about 1910 to 1917, the style of these short talks may necessitate more meditation on the part of the reader than more contemporary books would, but the gems of thought contained therein will more than reward those who will make the effort.

If you want to be called to the next level of discipleship and commitment to the cause of Christ, this book of daily devotionals will certainly be a great source of motivation and encouragement.

The Best of the Best.
If it wasn't for Oswald Chamber's wife, MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST would never have been published. After Chamber's death, his wife collected some of his writings together into this devotional book. Praise God for such a woman of noble character.MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST is one of the best daily devotions around. Chambers doesn't mess around with wishy-washy, look-at-the-Jesus-in-my-pocket Christianity. Instead, he delves deep into the essence of what it means to be a Christian. Chambers knew the importance of a moment and this book is full of wisdom in living a life pressed out to the best, giving one's utmost for His highest. There isn't another daily devotion to compare.

Best Christian devotional book I've read
This little book has impacted my personal Christian walk more than any other book besides the Bible.

Mr Chambers has managed so well to sublimate his life to the control of the Almighty that I continuously sense God's Holy Spirit speaking through the pages Mr Chambers wrote.

It's as if God reaches through the mere two paragraphs per day and grabs me by the lapels saying "I want YOU! I want ALL of you! Just trust ME to take care of your every need..."

I deeply appreciate this call to a whole hearted Christianity in today's pluralistic society. Oswald Chambers is an author whose work I will read and re-read into the foreseable future.

All MUTTS booksh a musht for your shelf!
When I read my first Mutts strips, I knew I had to have the books. I own them all, and I love them all. The strips are smart, touching, thought-provoking, memorable and funny. Not since A. A. Milne's Pooh Corner have animal characters possessed such distinctive and interesting traits and personalities. I can't wait for MUTTS V to come out so I can see what's new with Mooch, Earl, Guard Dog, Crabby, Sid, Shtinky Puddin', Woofie and the rest of the gang! Patrick McDonnell is a true dude.

BUY THIS BOOK!!! FUNNY, SERIOUS, SAD, HAPPY, WARM AND GREAT!
Hi, this is one of the best books I ever bought. IT has every quality people look for in a humerous book like this! I just bought the 2 MUTTS!! I can't wait to recieve and READ!!! 2 thumbs up. If your looking for a book to warm your heart, THIS is the one. :+)

McDonnell & 'Mutts' Uphold A Noble Tradition
Fans of classic newspaper strips, and of comics-based narrative, know what I'm saying here. MUTTS is the best thing to happen to the funny pages since that kid with the stuffed tiger. Many have called him our new Herrimann, but, despite having a cat in the strip, I think that's misleading: McDonnell is our new Cliff ('Polly and Her Pals') Sterrett. He shares so many of Sterrett's strengths and tendencies it's scary. Buy this book and help keep the dying lost art of the syndicated strip alive another day!
