Insight Guides Bali (Serial)
Published in Paperback by APA Productions (May, 1997)
Authors: Star Black, Insight Guides, and Ansight Guides
Average review score:

Great travel guide
I read the history background like a novel. The cultural information such as the drama, the dances, the religion, the art etc. is great. The photos are great too. I am back from Bali and I just take this book with me.

Insight Guide Bali
Insight Guide Bali is an exceptional travel guide. The history is well written and rich with interesting facts. I reads like a good novel. The maps are deteiled with plenty of cross references. There are plenty of travel tips from riding a bus to how to order food without MSGS. It appears that every possible travel issue has been addressed; from how not to get arrested to finding the swank resorts. The book is worth the price just for the exquisite pictures. I have never seen a travel book with photos as exceptional as these. Usually I purchase a couple of guide books before going to a new location, but this time I will only use the Insight Guide Bali.

Insight Guides Philippines

Authors: Sylvia Mayuga, Alfred Yuson, Scott Rutherford, and Insight Guides
Average review score:

Good book to learn about Philippines without going @^:^@
More than a travel guide, it spends more time on background and the meaning of sites in the Philippines. Many beautiful photos. Good book to learn about Philippines without going. My American friends that have read this book say it was BiG help to them in understanding not just travel only.

Very Informative
This is one of the books you should get when you're going to the Philippines. It is a very long book filled with good detailed facts. The photographers who took the pictures got very good shots of the Philippines. Another good thing about this book is that is has very good information when your touring the Philippines in the back of the book. It tells you information about the weather, lodging, holidays and festivals, what should be worn, and even how to speak basic Tagalog (the official language of the Philippines). There's a lot of things I haven't mentioned. If you want a good quality guidebook on the Philippines, then you should try this book!

Inspired Talks: My Master and Other Writings
Published in Paperback by Ramakrishna Vivekanada Center (September, 1987)
Authors: Swami Vivekananda and Swami Vivekanan
Average review score:

Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda was one of the greatest thinkers and teachers the world has ever produced. His talks are not for Hindus only. They transcend all barriers of religion and caste and are helpful for anyone who wants to realize God. His books are a must for any serious student of Philosophy.

Spiritual talks for sadhakas
Vivekananda, disciple of Ramakrishna, conducted a retreat for seven weeks with twelve followers near New York, a hundred years ago. One pupil noted down several of his inspired talks. This book contains those talks plus some additional material, mostly lectures of Vivekananda.

The talks are spiriutally very deep going, but not systematic at all. They are based on hinduism but use christian und buddhist terminology, as well. The book is very helpful if one practices hinduism. If one does not do so, the book would be rather meaningless, because the sayings were meant for close disciples, who knew what he meant and what it was all about.

Jack, the Lady Killer
Published in Paperback by Poisoned Pen Press (01 December, 1999)
Author: H. R. F. Keating
Average review score:

Experienced a verse novel
(H. R. F. Keating also writes the Inspector Ghote mystery series set in India.)

JACK, THE LADY KILLER is an unusual mystery because it's written in verse with illustrations. The first mystery I read in verse was Martha Grimes, SEND BYGRAVES, and I have been a fan of this unique style of story telling ever since. I am thrilled to say H.R.F. Keating's mystery in verse was just as unique and fun to read as SEND BRGRAVES.

Mr. Keating gives the author Vikram Seth credit for inspiring him after he read his verse novel THE GOLDEN GATE. He even quotes a verse of Vikram Seth's at the beginning of this mystery and I think those in the publishing business will get a kick out of it.

Mr. Keating's mystery takes place in 1935. Jack Steele, a new recruit to the Imperial Police Service in India is sent to take care of a panicked elephant. While he's gone someone murders widow Milly Marchbanks. With the District Superintendent in hospital Jack finds himself working the crime. A witness, a boy named "Little Brown Gramophone" tells Jack that just before Milly died she cried, " No, Jack, no! So searching for a member of the Briton Club named Jack should seem easy . . . but it isn't. The author takes the reader through the suspects, clues and emotions of Jack in verse.

If you haven't experienced a verse novel or mystery nows your chance. Don't miss it.

A good mystery that is in verse
In 1935, England reigns over the Indian subcontinent. Just graduating from school, Jack Stealton arrives in Punjab, India to join the Imperial Police Service. His supervisor, FHR Guthrie makes sure the new recruit understands that he represents England at all times. It is imperative that he insures the locals never forget that he is a superior being. As the months pass, Jack easily acclimates to his new home. However, while playing tennis with Jack at an exclusive club, Guthrie collapses from heatstroke on the court.

Not to long after that incident, someone murders Milly Marchbanks, a sex-starved man-eater. Her last words are: "No Jack! No Jack!" Seven club members allegedly were sleeping when the killing occurred. Jack believes one of them is lying and is the killer. With his mentor hospitalized and unable to guide him, Jack leads the inquiry. This investigation will either change Jack into confident law enforcement official or find him in need of a new profession.

JACK, THE LADY KILLER is an unusual historical police procedural as this tale is written in verse. Narrative poetry such as THE HIGHWAYMAN or THE RHYME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER is risky. In this case, the poetic format works with the mystery fully unfolding like any novel would have done. The talented H.R.F. Keating succeeds in providing his audience with a feel for the era and interesting characters, especially Jack and Guthrie. The English air of superiority to the natives adds depth to the overall tale. This colorful narrative poem is unique and entertaining. Anyone seeking an enjoyable but different book, should try JACK, THE LADY KILLER because no one will feel Keating is cheating them with this reading.

The Jesus Mystery
Published in Paperback by Aura Productions (October, 1985)
Authors: Janet Brock and Janet L. Bock
Average review score:

The Jesus Mystery explains a lot of years
I felt the book dealt with the issue of the teenage and early adult years of Jesus in a very realistic fashion. It was both eye opening and informative. I also noticed that the author, Janet Bock, had a video on the same subject, but I have been unable to locate a copy of it. If any readers could direct me to a site where I could purchase or see a copy I would appreciate it. Sincerely, Jim Handlin

Excellent historical account on the life of Jesus
The author does an excellent job in discussing the "Lost Years" in the life of Jesus, which include the years 12-30, and are not discussed in the New Testament (the Bible makes reference to Jesus only as a youth, and then as an adult). The Book discusses why Jesus, as a youth, left his home to migrate eastward to learn about the Vedic teachings which were present in India, Nepal and Tibet, and then later spread those teachings which he learned there to the West. Although this book may present an extreme controversy for an Occidental, the Author truly conveys her deep love and respect for Lord Jesus Christ. After reading this book, one should go back and read the Sermon on the Mount, and then you can truly see the uniformity (rather than the separation) between Chistianity and Hinduism.

Jinnah Creator of Pakistan
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (January, 1982)
Author: Hector Bolitho
Average review score:

How I knew Jinnah !
Mr Bolitho has written this biography a thousand time better than any Pakistani writer. We were taught about Quaed e Azam in the schools but no other book taught me more about the man whom I think was the greatest man ever walked on this earth....I love him...!

Bolitho Does Justice to Mr Jinnah
Written in a lucid and entertaining language, it gives us an indepth look on Mr Jinnah, the young secular Minded Lawyer and his conversion forced by the actions of Hindu Majority to the spokesman of the two Nation theory..

It does well to compare Mr Jinnah to his contemporary Ataturk of Turkey, and puts in to Perspective Mr Jinnah's achievement, namely Pakistan.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Authors: Richard Crane and Nicholas Crane

Simply the best read
Very simply, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in adventure travel. I picked it up and didn't stop reading until I'd finished the last page.

The next day I read it again.

Brilliant

An amazing journey by bicycle
This book is a must for anyone who likes exciting travel literature. Two cousins decide to undertake a cycling journey to the "Centre of the Earth" - the furthest place on the earth from the sea, which happens to be in a remote part of Western China. Starting at the coast in Bangladesh, they go on a journey which carries them across the Himalayas into China, experiencing almost every kind of weather imaginable. The journey is made even more incredible by the fact that they travel with no support, carrying all their gear. My favourite travel literature book - nothing I've read in the 8 years since I first picked it up gives the same sense of adventure . Mark Ness

Jungle Lore

THE TRUE NATURALISTS BOOK.
It will take you far, far into past, into the very heart of India, the land of jungles, of love, of true simplicity,

Jim Corbett will accompany you into the past with you and lead you into the future, this is a book that reiterates, that nature has no beginning as it has no end..., a revealing insight into one remarkable man, a britisher who was in India to live with its wonderful people and animals and who richly deserves the honour of being remembered even today, in the land he loved, and the place he tread, bears the call, CORBETT NATIONAL PARK.

Jungle Paths and Palace Treasures: An American Woman Encounters the Romance and Reality of India
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (June, 2001)
Authors: Mary Seniff Stickney and Donald James Minehart
Average review score:

Buy This Book!
Author Mary Stickney has a real winner here. A former wife of an American diplomat assigned to a remote province in India in the politically turbulent 60s, Stickney successfully takes the reader on an exotic, sometimes perilous journey. Opening with the arrival of her young family in India, the author's primary literary device is offering readers excerpts from personal journals. This makes her writing as fresh and inviting as the time they were first written three decades ago. The book is personal and unassuming, easy to read, and a genuine page-turner.

Highly recommended for those wanting to revisit India, as well as for first-time visitors to this fascinating, often physically challenging land. The writing encompasses history, overlapping religions and languages comprising the fabric of the country, and the complex social systems and customs of the land and its people. At the same time, JUNGLE PATHS deals with personal encounters and offers objective observations and fair criticisms throughout the course of the book. The continuing chasm between wealth and abject poverty in many parts of India is especially well-presented here.

I very much enjoyed reading this book.

Rod Haynes

Candid, personal memoir of life in an amazing land
If you like adventures and travel, you'll find plenty in this real-life story of 'strangers in paradise' -- an American family encountering a different world. The author shows you India vividly through her eyes, as she and her family explored the country, struggled with the problems, and ultimately were captivated by the land, the mystique and the people. She writes candidly about her experiences, both serious and humorous. A great way to get an inside look at some intriguing cultures and places.

The Kama Sutra Illuminated: Erotic Art of India
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 2002)
Author: Andrea Marion Pinkney
Average review score:

A big, fat, lovely book

This is absolutely the finest version of the Kama Sutra available. With 224 pages and a huge page size--14-1/2" by 10-1/2", over an inch thick, printed on high quality glossy paper, and absolutely full of full color photos of erotic Indian art, including statuary and several twice-size foldouts, it would be a bargain at twice the offered price here on Amazon.

For years the Kama Sutra has been the object of admiration because of its explicit sexual content, as well as its Tantric religious application for those interested in the practices of Eastern religions. Of course many in the West have sought it out as a source of ancient pornography, but the artwork represented in this book is not as anatomically correct as that which can be found in Playboy or Hustler, and therefore is less useful for voyeuristic titillation. However, for the student of Eastern religions, especially the Tantric tradition, it will be found to be unsurpassed.

The Hindi text, both in their calligraphy and the alphabet, and fully translated into English, is beautifully done. The absolutely gorgeous large sized full-color reproductions of ancient Indian art is exquisite.

Highly recommended!

amazing! ... exotic and erotic......just beautiful!
An unbeleiveably full, large format book with the most wonderful and colorful images of erotic Indian art imaginable. This book should really be selling for $... upwards for the quality and quantity of fantastic photos and images alone. A top-quality, heavy art book, indeed.
Fold-out pages also provide large scale formats and it seems no expense was spared to create the high quality images that abound in this awe-inspiring collection of wonderful erotic masterpieces. Truly the most captivating book I now proudly own.

As a traveler and lover of all things "India", I have been waiting for a book like this for a long time to give as a gift to my husband. This is the real heart of the matter...no need to actually read the Kama Sutra when what you really want is all right here. Even without the erotic theme, this book presents some of the most wonderful art of India I have ever seen in one breathtaking book. This book is an absolute "must" for any follower of Indian art, or just anyone who appreciates the delicious and delicate sex-play and sensualities of Indian art and history. Very inspiring :), very beautiful, exotic, erotic and just plain fabulous! What more could you want? I am thrilled with this purchase..... on all levels! A+++++
