Behind mud walls, 1930-1960
Published in Unknown Binding by University of California Press ()
Average review score:

A profound look at Indian cultureI first read this book for an independent study class on India, and I must say that this book is incredible. The insight the Wisers share with the readers is mindboggling-that the residents of a small Indian village would be willing to open their hearts, souls and emotions to Westerners enough for them the come back years later to the same effect is absolutely unbelievable. The Wisers have done an outstanding job on this book. I would recommend that readers interested should also read Pubjabi Century by Prakash Tandon, a book on Modern India.

Between two tanpuras
Published in Unknown Binding by Popular Prakashan ()
Average review score:

Excellent account of Indian musiciansIt is ironic that a country which equates musical sound, naad brahma, with God, has little literature in english on musicians. Between two Tanpuras by Vaman Deshpande is a welcome addition to the miniscule literature on Indian classical musicians. The book is based on the impressions created by musicians whom the author encountered in his musical journey. Little known facts about the doyen of yester years Ustad Alladiya Khan and his sons have been brought to light. The chapter on the wayward genius,Suresh Babu Mane, is touching. Mane battled with poverty while pursuing his musical talents. The book touchingly narrates how Mane practised alchemy in an attempt to get over his financial problems. Another impressive and informative chapter is on the current day diva Kishori Amonker. It traces in brief her rise to musical pinnalce after enduring many tribulation including loss of voice. The analysis of her singing style is refreshing and thankfully bereft of excessive technicalities.
The book is filled with interesting anecdotes about the musicians. With this labour of love Deshpande has done tremendous service to Indian classical music in helping the reader appreciate the lives of some of the musicians who contriuted their mite in keeping alive the musical tradition.

A great yogic master recounts the life of his Guru. The author, Swami Muktananda, was a great yogic master renowned for his ability to awaken the Kundalini in seekers, thereby enabling them to embark on the journey towards God realization. He established Siddha Yoga in the West at the behest of his Guru, Bhagawan Nityananda of Ganeshpuri. In this lively work, Swami Muktananda recounts the life of his Guru, a saint who attained God realization and who unceasingly worked to help others achieve the same goal. It is a story filled with miracles, love, devotion to God, the power of Siddha Yoga, and in particular the author's expressions of indebtedness to the man who made him what he was. This reader is left deeply moved.

Bharata: The Natyasastra
Published in Hardcover by South Asia Books (01 March, 1996)
Average review score:

Great Analysis of Natya SastraKapila is the leading authority on dance and art forms of India. She provides an in-depth analysis of Bharata's Natya Sastra. This book is written for serious dance students and who have strong background in dance theory. Great deal of Sanskrit terminology is used all through this book. Understanding of religion, culture, literature is very helpful while reading this book.
It was real treat for me to read this book. Kapila approachs each aspect of Naya Sastra and and explains how it evolved over the centuries. Her research and objective thinking, conclusions based on clear analysis are apparent all through this book. This book is a great addition to the world of classical Indian dance.

This book, I have to say, was The best book I have ever readThis book contained some of the inner thoughts of India I never knew about. My parents are from India and I,myself, have been to India a few times. The way the girl grew up is unreadable. This book is so good that words can not express my feelings. The way she grew up and worked herself up to her goal, which was to reach America. That was her goal and her destination. That is what I felt about this book.

The Hidden FactsNOT REVIEW:
The book is not available in Bhutan or else in India, though it is said to contian some facts on political turmoil in Bhutan. The author happened to be the close friend of the Third King of Bhutan, so the contents will be invaluable to the reseachers and the Bhutanese historians.
