India and World Civilization
Published in Hardcover by Michigan State Univ Pr (November, 1969)
Author: D. P. Singhal
Average review score:

Great Book; Deserves to be Reprinted!
This is an excellent Indo-centric view of world history. It deserves to be read widely. Singhal's style is lively and he gathers together a great deal of lesser-known evidence. In particular, there is an interesting chapter on the possibility of early contact between India and the New World.

India at Century's End: Essays on History and Politics
Published in Hardcover by Voice of India (01 December, 1994)
Author: Subhash Kak
Average review score:

A major reassessment of Indian history
These essays present a host of topics, from new archaeology to orientalism to the current problems of quotas and insurgencies in the Punjab and Kashmir. In particular, the book very effectively argues against the simplistic, yet very influential, views of the Orientalists and their leftist followers in India.

India Holy Song
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (November, 2000)
Authors: Xavier Zimbardo and Jhumpa Lahiri
Average review score:

Bee-yoo-tiful. Thumbs Up!
All I can say is, WOW.

This book is a breathtaking spectacle of color, textures, emotions, and INTELLIGENCE. What I mean is, this just isn't a book of random photographs...these are exquisitely beautiful, intelligent photographs. The fact that the pictures have been taken in India makes it more exotic and adds a bit of spice to the already obvious mysticism.

I can't say I'm a professional at photograpgy, but even i can see the classiness of this piece of art. If you love photos, exotic cultures, or even a bit of sensitivity in photographs, this book is definitely a recommended buy.

Signing off,

Secret Agent Booker

India Seen Afar
Published in Hardcover by George Braziller (August, 1991)
Author: Kathleen Raine
Average review score:

Important work! The truth about values is spoken!
In India, elders and respected and revered, duty is more important than personal gain, and family and friendships are everything. I've seen the differences first-hand throughout my life, but have never put words to those impressions, first formed as a child and then re-discovered as an adult, as Ms. Raine has done. What a gift her book has been for me!

India's Bene Israel: A Comprehensive Inquiry and Sourcebook
Published in Hardcover by Judah L. Magnes Museum (June, 1989)
Author: Shirley Berry Isenberg
Average review score:

The sub-title says exactly what the book is.
As a Bene Israel Jew the book impressed me very much. Lot of research work was done by the author. Many customs and history of the Bene Israel community are written profoundly by the author. The book isn't only about the Bene Israel, but also about other Jewish communities in India and outside India. The book also includes Indian history. This book is a good example of what a comprehensive book should be like.

India's Development Experience: Selected Writings of S. Guhan
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (January, 2003)
Authors: S. Subramanian and S. Guhan
Average review score:

Sharp Intelligence, Humane Instincts, Rational Thought
The book - by a senior Indian civil servant - is a reflection of the personality of the author. A collection of writings over 20-odd years or so, Guhan's deep commitment to poverty alleviation and the establishment of social justice in a country of contrasts like India shines through this book. But no maudlin sentiments here. Guhan is known amongst the Tamil Brahmin community as a person of acerbic manner and he did not tolerate fools easily. Easily one of the brightest civil servants to grace India's halls of governance, his razor-sharp mind informs the debate in this book. Its hard to summarise this book since Guhan has written on classical dance to the Ayodhya dispute to social security for the poor - I suggest that the serious student of India and of development economics read this. In particular I would recommend the essay on Centre-State relations and how a poorly defined federal structure has held back development in India. Guhan died relatively young. Its a great loss.

India's Gupta Dynasty (Cultures of the Past)
Published in Library Binding by Benchmark Books (September, 1996)
Author: Kathryn Hinds
Average review score:

This book
This book is full of juicy information and is a wonderful book for teachers teaching their students. If I was a history teacher, I think that they should have a variaty of different books, this is specifically on the India's Gupta Dynasty. The Gupta Dynasty has traded with the China Han Dynasty and the Perssian Sassanid dynasty. I happen to be a big fan of the Gupta Dynasty.
