Full of good tips and beautiful pictures
This book is a great keepsake as well as guide book. The photographs are beautiful, so you get to "see" parts of the country that you would otherwise not be exposed to. The book has good travel hints (such as special airfares for nonresidents). Well formatted also with special symbol for hints specific to geographic areas.

Islam: A Primer
Published in Paperback by Middle East Editorial Assoc (December, 1990)
Author: John Sabini
Average review score:

Sensitive Introduction to a Maligned Culture
This book is a wonderful introductory handbook for anyone unfamiliar with the beliefs, practices, and/or history of the Muslim world. It could easily be subtitled 'everything you want to ask a Muslim but were too afraid you'd offend him/her if you did.' The text is clear, brief and to the point. Although the language is simple, the book is not simplistic and does not make sweeping generalizations.

The book is organized by topic. The first chapter orients the reader with a geographic and demographic overview of Islamic world, while another chapter (Islamic Civilization) provides a cultural overview. 'The Spread of Islam' outlines political history of the Islamic world. Muslim beliefs and traditions, as well as the relationships between Islam, Christianity and Judaism, are explained. This little book is highly recommended for those who consider themselves informed about the culturally diverse peoples in the world, or in their own communities.

It's always possible : transforming one of the largest prisons in the world
Published in Unknown Binding by Sterling Publishers ()
Author: Kiran Bedi
Average review score:

Kiran Bedi - A Transformer in the Radical Mode
Kiran Bedi is a woman who is unafraid and goes where no man has gone before. In this book she carefully documents her tenure at Tihar Jail, the largest prison in Asia. Because she has taken copious notes she is able to reconstruct her observations and experiences in great detail. From the beginning to the end she outlines what she saw, how she dealt with it, her successes and the few failures. The conditions she was met with when she got there are abominable. As more and more people get involved and begin to care, as she does, the prison grows and blossoms - from a hell hole to an ashram, from a stinking garbage heap to a fruitful colony of people who really want to change. Her emphasis over and over is on the people - actually rehabilitating everyone. "It's Always Possible" is a perfect title, as it is what she believes, what she knows is the potential for each and every human being. The story is simple, the facets many and complicated. The language is "Indian English" - at times a little different from "Standard" English. But every page is worthwhile, every paragraph brings a new insight, a new piece of the puzzle that helps to elucidate how and why Tihar Jail was the way it was and how it was possible to transform it. Prison Administration everywhere should read this book and try to meet with Ms. Bedi. What she says and how she says it is not out of reach of the normal human being. As fellow human beings on this planet we can all take inspiration and gain humility and big-heartedness from this amazing woman and her accomplishments.

Jackals' Wedding: A Memoir of a Childhood in British India
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (February, 2003)
Author: Dawn Kawahara
Average review score:

A fascinating story of life in British India
Jackals' Wedding is a fascinating book about growing up in British India, and the authors' trip back as an adult trying to understand the mysteries of her childhood. Her family's buried secrets, particularly the mysterious disappearance of her father, make for an interesting exploration into the culture of the times and family dynamics.

I picked up this 500-plus page book on a Wednesday and barely put it down until it was completed on Saturday, four days later. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel.

The Jahangirnama: Memoirs of Jahangir, Emperor of India
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (November, 1999)
Authors: Jahangir and Wheeler M. Thackston
Average review score:

Miniature painting at its best
I would recommend this book for serious folks interested in the art of Mogul Miniatures. Jahangir was a very special king and this book sheds light on the magic of the time period. It is a big and physically heavy book but such a joy to read. You can glimpse into the interests and lives of the royality and experience their lives in detail. The authors have gone into alot of research and there are many descriptions to dates, calendar, language and art. The book itself is a work of art. The reproductions of the miniature paintings, including many portraits of the royal court, are excellent. It is about time that art such as this is understood, recognized and appreciated. This book leads the way.
