Jawaharlal Nehru : a biography
Published in Unknown Binding by J. Cape ()
Average review score:

Simply BeautifulThis is truly a great biography. Gopal writes with thoughtfulness and class. It tells about the joys and pains in Nehru's life in a original fashion. The insightfulness and portrayal of characters are just too good. The only single drawback I can think of is that there is not a very distinct clarity about events in Nehru's lifespan. But other than that, it's a good read for those interested in Indian politics.

Journey to Unknown India
Published in Paperback by Mandala Publishing Group (March, 1999)
Average review score:

bhakta - an indian odysseewalter eidlitz was one of the first westerners who happened to be initiated into the bhakti cult of the vaishnava school following the tradition of krishna caitanya (1486 - 1533) who brought about a powerful renaissance of theistic vedanta in india, esp. in bengal. he also wrote an elaborate biography of krishna caitanya, published in the series of the 'Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis - Stockholm Studies in Comparative Religion'. the book is an authentic report of eidlitz's trip to india in 1938, his search for spiritual guidance, his internment in a prisoner-of-war camp during world war II where he finds sadananda who becomes his friend and guru and who introduces him to the bhakti tradition. eidlitz writes a beautifully clear and modest prose, translates from original scriptural texts and weaves the story of his search and journey into the spiritual interpretation of homer's odyssee. 'journey to unknown india' is a thruthful and authentic document of a spiritual quest that impresses mostly with the sincerity of the author's endevour to theoretically understand and practically implement the teachings of a living spiritual tradition that was hardly known in the west by the time the book was first published in 1951.

The Jugglers
Published in Paperback by Four Seasons Publishers (September, 1999)
Average review score:

A very interesting readJust when you thought it was safe to go back to college, Dr. Gregg shows you otherwise. The story is filled with all of the foibles of humanity and a few more reserved for college administrators. Things happen fast, once they are started. You won't want to put the book down. There is murder, drug dealing, gangs, mob activity, larceny, lust - another words, something for everyone.

Karachi, Magacity of Our Times
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr (01 May, 1997)
Average review score:

blurred memories of the city - a wonder to the youthThis book gives a lot to Karachi which in recent times has been in extreme political turmoil, terrorism, and ill organised city planning has led one to think low of the city but this book tells us tales of our father's time, the usual hangouts, the hotspots and the lifestyles of the people here. The authors talk about Karachi in a sequence starting from its early inhabitants moving up to the british rule, their contribution to the country's money making city all the way to the current times.
Can be a good bed time story for the newer generation!

Kathak: Indian Classical Dance Art
Published in Hardcover by South Asia Books (01 February, 1995)
Average review score:

Beautiful, historically accurate bookIf you are interested in Kathak or just Indian history and culture, this book is for you. A huge hardcover book filled with an abundance of detailed information and fabulous color and b&w photographs. It gives history and good information of each Kathak gharana, including some guru/disciple bio's and lineage of each gharana.
The book shares details on costume, music, and some technical and aesthetic aspects of Kathak movements and footwork. For example, there is a short frame-by-frame photo sequence, with written translation of Pandit Gopi Krishna performing a ghazal. This book is an informative and inspiring must-have for all Kathakers, although it is not a "How-To" book (which would be impossible). Thanks to Amazon.com for obtaining this difficult to locate prize!
