The authoritive text on canal irrigation in Asian Countries
A comprehensive review of political managerial and economic issues of canal irrigation including; impact, managing proffessionals, operational management of schemes. An excellent text, should be read by any proffessionals related to irrigation, however neglects to cover comprehensively life cycle costing, agronomic or drainage management. Although the analysis is in Asia, the text and ideas are transferable globally. Well written, clear text from this excellent author.

Masters of Mahamudra: Songs and Histories of the Eighty-Four Buddhist Siddhas (Suny Series in Buddhist Studies)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (August, 1986)
Authors: Abhayadatta and Keith Dowman
Average review score:

All the mahasiddhas in one volume!
Dowman's book is a translation, or, as Dowman himself calls it, adaption, of a Tibetan text "Legends of the Eighty-four mahasiddhas" and is as such central among the translations of Vajrayana Buddhist texts available in English. All the biographies are given here in one volume along with a good introduction to Buddhist tantra. Along with every biography is given a short verse from another Tibetan work; the verse describes in a condensed form the nature of the given siddha's realisation. Also, after the particular biography, Dowman describes the particular practice (sadhana) of each mahasiddha, and finally, in a historiography section at the end of each legend, discusses certain factors, particulars not given in the biographies themselves, as trying to locate in time and space where the stories take place. The commentaries are what really make the book worth reading, because the legends themselves are difficult to understand. Dowman shows that these old stories are not just fairy tales about magicians. They tell something significant about how to progress spiritually, sometimes from the unlikeliest of circumstances.

Memoirs of Cyril Jones: People, Society and Railways in Hyderabad
Published in Hardcover by South Asia Books (March, 1992)
Author: Omar Khalidi
Average review score:

What a life - Hyderabad & districts in early 1900s
An excellent book giving us a rare look into life in the Nizam's Dominions in the early 1900s through the eyes of Cyril Lloyd Jones. Jones although an extremely clever man (an engineer) and one whose services would have been snapped up in the US and elsewhere, gave no consideration for self but put his country (England) and his adopted home (Hyderabad) and the friends he made there first. He enjoyed the outdoor life, the jungles and camping and the shikar - although he did not shoot very much. Hyderabad and the Nizam's Government are indebted to this man for his unselfishness in giving of himself to build the NSGR (Nizam's State Guaranteed Railway) one on which I travelled (safely) many times during my life in India.

A rare record, a rare book and a rare man.

Highly recommended for all Hyderabadi historians.

Memsahibs Abroad
Published in Hardcover by South Asia Books (July, 1998)
Author: Indira Ghose
Average review score:

fascinating study of English colonial women travelers
This is a brilliant, extremely well-written account of English women colonial travellers to India in the nineteenth century. Far form being emancipators of the colonized, Ghose provocatively argues, these women, a la Anna and the King of Siam, were engaged in a "civilizing" project of the "natives" which was complicit with the orientalist and imperialist interests of the British Empire. Ghose's acute, astute account of the "female gaze" as it played out at a particular historical moment has broad implicatins for feminist criticism in general and for film studies as well.

Mental Health of Indian Women : A Feminist Agenda
Published in Hardcover by Sage Publications (March, 1999)
Author: Bhargavi V Davar
Average review score:

An excellent glimpse
Bhargavi Davar's book filled my long wait for a complete and factual look into the status of psychoanalysis and care practise with respect to Indian women. The book transcends from being a synopsis of care practises and sociological practises by discussing various aspects of psychoanalysis, myths and existing social conditions in a very eruditic manner. Her discussions throughout the book are excellent materials for raising questions on various aspects of the situation of mental illnesses and disorders. Through this book, Bhargavi has opened the doors for a feminist participation in the psychoanalytic movement and has geared it towards an addressing of gender based questions as well as phenomenological questions on the discipline itself. Its a must read for all Indian women, professionals of this and other related discipline and also for people interested in psychoanalysis and social science questions.

The Merchant and the Thief: A Folktale of Godly Wisdom
Published in Hardcover by Chariot Victor Pub (October, 1999)
Authors: Ravi Zacharias and Lad Odell
Average review score:

Gospel adaptation of an Indian folk tale standard
The old standard folk tale with more beef to the story. You've got adventure, larceny, evil, and the logical triumph of good through perception, deception and ingenuity. The illustrations are incredible, with amazing color and lighting. They look like fully rendered fine art oil paintings. My son lit up like a light bulb when he saw this art. Even the cover design is a cut above. I can't believe the publisher wouldn't show pictures of this in Amazon. Lad and Ravi, hats off. A standard for all childrens' books to meet.

Mission With Mountbatten
Gives a very clear view of the happenings during partition of India. For me this book also put into perspective the role played by major players like Gandhi, Nehru, Jinha, Patel, Mountbatten etc. and their interpersonal relationships and politics.
