Nepal: A Children's Travelogue
Published in Paperback by University Editions (October, 1997)
Author: Maryan Hurtt
Average review score:

The watercolor illustrations alone are amazing!
This book is an adventure for kids. It introduces kids to trekking in Nepal- home to the highest mountains on Earth.

The watercolor illustrations in this book bring the trek to life and leave plenty of room for imagination. What might surprise many people who have not trekked in Nepal (or anywhere), but which is conveyed beautifully in this book, is that the mountains, grand as they are, are only part of the experience of trekking there. The people, their culture, the plants and animals- those are the real treasures of Nepal. Meeting some of them is a large part of the reward of trekking there. After introducing different aspects about life in Nepal, this book frequently challenges the reader by asking them for comparisons with their own culture and surroundings.

Colorful, adventurous, and challenging- this is a great new kids book!

A Nepalese Journey: The Essence of the Annapurna Circuit
Published in Hardcover by Mountaineers Books (May, 2002)
Author: Andrew Stevenson
Average review score:

stunning photography and an intimate portrayal
I picked NEPALESE JOURENY recently and it is a fantastic reminder of a trip I made around the Annapurnas in April. I saw the book in Kathmandu and bought it when I returned home. The stunning photography shows not only mountains but it also shows the people you meet and the tea-houses you stay in. The text also provides a intimate portrayal of the local people who live in the Annapurnas. For anyone who is thinking of going to the Annapurna in Nepal, or anyone who has been there already like me, and wants a photo album of their trip and all the things they saw then this is a book you should have on your coffee table.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: From Kabul to Battle of Imphal
Published in Hardcover by Stosius Inc/Advent Books Division (December, 1988)
Author: H.N. Pandit
Average review score:

A Clear Account of Netaji's Struggle against the English
This is a very well written book about one of the most outstanding subcontinental leaders in the struggle against British occupation. Mr Pandit takes us from the moment Subhas Chandra Bose escapes disguised as an Italian to Europe, to the tragic defeat of the I.N.A ( Indian National Army) at Imphal. This book presents the situation during WWII with great clarity. It goes into the details of the alliance between the Free India Forces and the Axis who were locked in a life-and-death struggle with the British. Mr Pandit shows how the Indian Legion in Europe waned with the departure of Netaji when he realized that German involvement in Russia would dash any hopes of aid to the hard-pressed freedom fighters in the Indian Subcontinent. It describes the dramatic U-Boat journey of Subhas Chandra Bose back to Asia. Mr Pandit again with great dexterity , goes into the political climate amongst the Subcontinental leaders during the struggle in the East. Leading an I.N.A. army which was desperate for arms and food supplies Subhas Chandra Bose came as far as Chittagong with the Japanese forces. H.N. Pandit describes the ferocious spirit of the nationalists as they gave the British occupation forces a vicious beating. In the end for their own expediency the Japanese failed to aid the I.N.A. at the appropiate moment, which was 1942, when British forces were at their weakest, not in 1943, when after Midway the Japanese were themselves reeling from a deathblow to the backbone of their naval might: the elite aircraft carriers. All said, Imphal doomed the I.N.A. but as Netaji said, freedom could now be only forestalled, but never prevented. Mr Pandit pinpoints all these facts with great accuracy. He also goes into the famine of 1943 in Bengal, and the ruthless way in which the British allowed 3 million Bengalis to die. In conclusion, this book is a very good guide to the life and times of Subhas Chandra Bose during the turbulent struggle for freedom. It is both inspiring and heartbreaking in many ways. It defines the period of Subcontinent's struggle for independence in its triumph, terror and tragedy. This book is definitely for those interested in reading about the Struggle for the Subcontinent's freedom and the man who led the people in their desire to drive out the despotic forces of occupation.

Newton Forster, or the Merchant Service (Classics of Nautical Fiction Series)
Published in Paperback by McBooks Press (March, 1998)
Author: Frederick Marryat
Average review score:

A good naval romp
O.K. O.K. Marryat's books tend to be full of unlikely circumstances and coincidences and sappy, happy endings. On the other hand, his novels are naval action adventures of the Napoleanic age written by a man who was actually a captain in the nineteenth century British navy, albeit somewhat after the Napoleanic Wars. As long as you sit back and enjoy the story, the adventures and misadventures of Newton Forster are just plain fun. And, remember, this book was written more than a century before Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey had even been thought of.

Nityananda: In Divine Presence
Published in Paperback by Rudra Pr (December, 1901)
Authors: Swami Chetanananda and M.U. Hatengdi
Average review score:

A beautiful reflection of a great being's life.
This book is a must for anyone who follows the lives of great, enlightened beings. Bhagavan Nityananda was a great Siddha, or perfected master. He was a born Avatar or realized being from birth. He was endowed with the light of God. He was loved and respected by thousands of spiritual seekers who came to have his Darshan or simply put to be in his presence. This book examines his odd but thoroughly amazing ways through stories, examples and photographs. The photographs themselves are enough for the price of admission as he was not photographed very often. The power of his being is quite apparent through the many different images presented in this book. Bhagavan Nityananda bestowed his lineage to Swami Muktananda ( his name means: The Bliss of Freedom) who then brought the meditation revolution to the West in the early 70's. Swami Muktananda's successor, Swami Chidvilasanada ( whos name means; The Bliss of the Play of Consciousness) or Gurumayi as she is affectionaltely called is the present living master in this lineage. Both Swami's Muktananda and Chidvilasanda have both written extensively about meditation and the practices of Yoga in the most exceptional ways. If you find this book compelling I highly recommend that you follow up with one of Swami Muktananda's books such as "Play of Consciousness" or "Bhagavan Nityananda of Ganeshpuri"or Gurumayi's "My Lord Loves a Pure Heart." There is something very real and profound in these writings.

No Dinner: The Story of the Old Woman and the Pumpkin
Published in Hardcover by Marshall Cavendish Corp/Ccb (March, 2000)
Author: Jessica Souhami
Average review score:

Great book for children from 3 to 7
This book tells a similar story of the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" but with very interesting culture differences. One twist to the plot is that the grandmother visits her granddaughter and she meets three different animals (a wolf, a bear and a tiger) on her way to her granddaughter's house.

My two children like this story but my 3 year old son dearly loves it. The illustrations are colorful and the story line is cute but predictable. (I think that is why my son loves it and has almost memorized it). I would not be a bit surprised if this book becomes a new classic.

Non-Violent Resistance (Satyagraha)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 2001)
Author: M. K. Gandhi
Average review score:

purna swaraj
I learned a great deal from Mahatma Gandhiji (1869-1948) by reading NON-VIOLENT RESISTANCE. This book is a collection of articles written at the hand of Gandhiji for the magazines "Young India" and "Harijan". In addition, there are some interviews. The term Satyagraha was authored by Gandhiji to describe the process of non-violent resistance. Satyagraha has as its goal reform. It requires a great deal of discipline on the part of the participants. It also requires an opponent that is capable of reform. I have been applying what I have learned from this book in an attempt to reform myself. If you are interested in the life of Mahatma Gandhiji, or in the process of non-violent resistance, this book will be interesting to you.

Notes from Another India
Published in Paperback by Pluto Press (01 August, 1995)
Author: Jeremy Seabrook
Average review score:

Fascinating, Illuminating, Inspiring
Jeremy Seabrook is a rare journalist, one that feels such absolute empathy for the subjects of his writings, but who also understands the broader context in which his characters struggle. Notes from Another India is a must read for anyone interested in changing the world, really changing the world for the better, and what people in India and the entire Third World have to face on a daily basis in that struggle. The book pulls no punches, immersing the reader in a nightmare of human misery, while all along, providing glimmers of hope in the people's movements. One of the most momentous and meaningful books of the late twentieth century.
